MA252: Introduction to Differential Equations

This is the first part of two semester courses on classical mechanics. Main topics covered in this course are:
  • Kinematics
  • Forces and Newton's Laws of Motion
  • Harmonic Oscillations
  • Conservation of Energy
  • Conservation of Momentum
  • Lagrangean Methods

PH461 and PH561 cover the same topics. However, the students in PH561 will be given higher levels of homework and exam problems than those in PH461.

Messages from the Instructor
  • As scheduled, Test 1 will be held on Sep. 18.
  • The class will meet in CH394 at 9:30AM on Aug. 19 as scheduled

Many homework problems will be given every week. Homework must be turned in electronically by email. (Use the department fax machine in the mailroom which scans sheets and sends the images by email.)

Two midterm exams and a final comprehensive exam will be given. Students must take all three exams.


Exams and assignments carry the following maximum possile points. Two midterm exams (20 pts. each), Final exam (40 pts.), Homework and other assignments (20 pts.). The total maximum possible points is 100. Letter grades are determined by the rule given in the table.
