College Physics II (PH202-NG) Course Information
Course Description: This second term of non-calculus-based physics will cover electromagnetic fields, electric circuits, electromagnetic waves, optics, quantum systems including atoms, and nuclear physics.

General learning objectives: To develop the abilities:
  • to collect and evaluate information with obervation and experiments
  • to understand the natural world through laws and principles of natures
  • to apply quantitative reasoning to the naturally occuring phenomona.
Specific Learning Objectives:
  • To understand physics of
    • Electromagnetic phenomena
    • Ohm's law and eletric circuites
    • Optics (mirrors, lenses, interference phenomena, etc.)
    • Selected topics from quantum phenomena and nature of atoms.
    • Selected topics from nuclear physics
  • To develop the ability to apply the fundamental physical principles to explain physical phenomena. You should be able to:
    • read a description of the problem and translate nonscientific prose into the language of physics
    • set up figures or diagrams to assist in analyzing the problem
    • identify key physical principles that leads to a solution
    • find a relationship between the given information and quantities to be determined.
    • carry out mathematical operations to reach a solution.
  • To gain the ability to collect, evaluate and communicate scientific information through laboratory experiments.
Expected Outcomes:
Students successfully completing this course will demonstrate knowledge of fundamental concepts in electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics and the ability to apply this knowledge and mathematical skills in algebra, trigonometry and vectors for quantitative reasoning and problem solving.

Exams

Three midterm exams and one comprehensive final exam will be given. The final exam will be given on Aug 4, 2009 from 4:15PM to 6:45PM. No textbook nor notebook is allowed in the exams. One letter-size hand-written information sheet is allowed. You can write down mathematical formulae, laws and principles of physics, physical formulae, physical constants, and other concepts related to physics and mathematics on the information sheet. However, you are not allowed to write solutions of any problem including homework problems and example problems in textbook. A calculator may be used. If you could not take an exam due to unforeseen problems, a make-up exam may be given. You can make up only one exam. You must notify the instructor within a day or two of the exam day with a written reason for the make-up. No more than one exam can be made up.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be frequently given during recitation without advanced notice. No make-up quiz will be given.

Homework

Homework are electronically processed by WebAssign: http://www/webassign.net/uab/login.html

In order to solve homework problems, you need Internet access and a web browser (Firefox is recommended.) Homework due is strictly enforced by computer. You are strongly advised to start homework as soon as it is assigned.

Grading

Successful completion of lab(PH202L) and recitation(PH202R) is required to pass the lecture course (PH202). Students who do not regularly attend lab or recitation will receive "F" regardless of their exam scores in the lecture course.

Course grade is determined based on the three midterm exams (10 pts each), final exam (30 pts), recitation (10 pts), Lab (15 pts) and Homework (15 pts).

Letter grades are determined based on total score (Max=100 pts). The following table shows a general guideline of the letter grades. The border lines may be adjusted depending on the class average and standard deviation.

Incomplete "I" is given to students who could not take the final exam beofre the term ends with reasonable excuses. In order to receive "I", you must complete more than 80% of homework, 80% of recitation, 80% of lab, and all of three mid term exams before the end of of the term (Aug 6, 2008).

Withdrawal from the course

Last day to withdraw from the course with "W": July 6, 2009

Medical withdraw: If you developed serious medical problems during the term, you can withdraw from the course at any time before the end of the term. Consult with your adviser. If you have missed two or more exams due to major medical problems, you should consider medical withdraw.
